Each student serves as a teaching assistant during one semester in their second or third year to satisfy the teaching requirement of the program. This experience provides training in teaching and communication skills. For more information about teaching at MIT please visit https://oge.mit.edu/development/teaching/. Students are assigned to TA specific courses through consultation between the CSB Program Co-Directors and representatives of specific departments (usually Biology and Biological Engineering) who request CSB TAs for their courses, seeking to match student backgrounds and interests with available courses. Students are notified of their TA assignment by the department sponsoring the course in the summer before their second year. CSB works with departments to make TA assignments.Only one TA experience is required; the CSB PhD program strongly discourages students from taking on TA responsibilities beyond the one semester that is required.
All students must register for 12 units of CSB.199 Teaching Experience in Computational Systems Biology in the semester that they TA.
